Dog Walking Gear Essentials: What to Bring on Every Walk
You don't need much to walk a dog, but the right gear makes a big difference in comfort and safety. Here's what experienced dog walkers consider essential.
The Basics
- 6-foot leash — Nylon or biothane. Skip retractable leashes — they teach pulling and reduce your control.
- Well-fitted harness — Front-clip harnesses discourage pulling without putting pressure on the throat. Essential for brachycephalic breeds.
- Poop bags — Biodegradable preferred. Attach a dispenser to your leash so you never forget.
- ID tags — Even with a microchip, a visible tag with your phone number is the fastest way to reunite with a lost dog.
Hydration
- Collapsible water bowl — Lightweight silicone bowls fold flat and clip to your belt or leash
- Water bottle — For walks over 20 minutes in warm weather, bring water for both of you
Seasonal Gear
- Summer: Cooling bandana or vest, paw wax for hot surfaces
- Winter: Dog coat/sweater, booties, paw balm (protects against salt and ice)
- Rain: Waterproof dog jacket, microfiber towel for drying off
- Dark conditions: LED collar light, reflective vest or leash
Nice to Have
- Treat pouch — Rewards for training during walks
- Long line (15-30 ft) — For open fields where your dog can explore safely
- First aid kit — Bandages, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers (for thorns or ticks) in a small pouch
One Thing to Avoid
Retractable leashes. They teach dogs that pulling extends their range, give you almost no control in emergencies, and the thin cord can cause burns and lacerations. A standard 6-foot leash is safer, gives consistent boundaries, and costs less.
